Studio now filled with drawers filled with wax, wax working and forming tools. Initialling trialled different wax recipes for a durable, stable product made up of various ratios of paraffin, beeswax, carnuba wax, calenilla wax, pine resin, microcystalline wax and colourings. Also trialled a range of techniques for putting image onto wax including oil paint, encaustic wax, carving and filling. Recent focus on casting hollow forms in beeswax using balloons, and cone-shaped candles using molds. Some early technical challenges with foaming/cracking now largely resolved after conversations, advice, new moulding techniques and incorporating small amounts of new wax formulations from Gary Prest at Bluebox Technical. Lots of experimenting with different percentage wax ratios to get the final material properties ‘right’ and to avoid and/or remove latex residue from the balloons (the brand of balloon matters too – for shape and structural integrity of the latex).
